Rocky Flintoff hit his maiden List A half-century in Lancashire’s One-Day Cup match against Middlesex at Emirates Old Trafford.

The 16-year-old son of former England captain Andrew Flintoff was out for 88 off the final ball of Lancashire’s 233-9, which came in a rain-reduced 48 overs.

Flintoff is making his fifth appearance for the Red Rose after becoming their youngest ever player, aged 16 years and 113 days, when he made his debut against Kent on 28 July.

He has already scored a hundred for England Under-19s in a youth Test against Sri Lanka and in red-ball cricket for Lancashire 2nd XI this summer, and has signed his first professional contract with Lancashire.

Batting at number four in the Group A encounter on Thursday, Flintoff came to the wicket at 25-2 and, with wickets falling around him, he had to be the mainstay of the innings.

He reached 50 from 77 balls and found good support from Tom Bailey (30) as they put on 61 for the eighth wicket.

Flintoff needed to hit the last two balls of the innings for six to reach his century but he played out a dot to the penultimate ball.

Then from the last of the innings bowled by Middlesex’s Henry Brookes, he was caught on the long-off boundary by Josh de Caires, son of another former England captain, Michael Atherton from the 115th ball he had faced.
