BBC Wales Sport has learned Newport in negotiations with the “Stags” over a fee and its understood a switch is close to being finalised.
Newport always expected interest in Evans this summer and triggered a year extension on his contract at the end of last season, hence talks over a price.
Evans netted 21 goals in League Two last season, placing him sixth in the fourth tier’s top scorers, despite the club finishing in a lowly 18th position in the division.
As early as January then manager Graham Coughlan confirmed there had been approaches for the 27-year-old former farmer from Llangedwyn.
Earlier this summer Newport chairman Huw Jenkins admitted he had had to knock back interest from two League One clubs in the Wales C striker.
Now Evans is on the brink of moving to Nigel Clough’s Mansfield, who are back in the third tier for the first time in 21 year, having finished in the third League Two automatic promotion spot behind Stockport County and Wrexham
Former Cardiff Met player Evans is an industrious front runner who joined Newport from Cymru Premier League outfit Bala Town in May 2022.
Evans has been used as a left sided wing back while at Newport. But the move the the front line unleashed his goal scoring potential last season.
He backed up his impressive league tally by scoring during an eye catching performance in the 4-2 FA Cup home defeat to eventual winners Manchester United, in January to finish with 25 goals in all competitions last season.
