Modi to review MFN status to Pakistan revocation will affect Indi

KARACHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has convened a meeting today to review ‘Most Favourite Nation’ status given to Pakistan in 1996, in a bid to harm Pakistan’s interests.Amid rising tensions between the two countries, Indian government is desperate to hurt Pakistan in any way possible.Earlier this week, Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting to mull options for revoking Indus Water Treaty (IWT) and stop our share of water guaranteed under the agreement.Indian PM Modi is scheduled to meet officials from the ministries of external affairs and commerce and industry to weigh India’s options on withdrawing MFN status to Pakistan. It is pertinent to mention here that this status does not grant any special treatment to Pakistan.Experts are of the view that withdrawing MFN status will not affect Pakistan trade in fact it would harm Indian traders.Contrary to what is believed by Modi administration, it is in India’s benefit to grant MFN status to Pakistan. In FY 2016, Indian imports from Pakistan were worth USD 400 million against exports of USD 1.8 billion.
